On Tuesday 15th April we met with Andy and Tanya from Sheffield City Council (SCC). We did a walk over of both parks. Both parks have recently been surveyed by the team to check the safety and condition of play and exercise facilities. This report aided discussion and highlighted those works that the Council are intending to carry out and also provide clarity on the Council’s position toward the level of repair for equipment.
Totley Hall Park
The football pitches are protected and form part of the playing pitch strategy for the the Council in meeting community needs for grass root sport pitches. We discussed the need for a masterplan for both parks and this will need to take account of the pitches and ensure that nothing is proposed that would inhibit use.
The surface to the MUGA has been assessed and considered acceptable.
The plans for Totley Hall Park are less comprehensive than those proposed at Green Oak, largely down to the immediate need for repair and maintenance at Green Oak. There was previously work scheduled to do spot repairs and tidy up the pumptrack. This was not carried out and there are currently no plans to repair or maintain the track. However, the Council will support us in enquires to undertake work to the pumptrack. We will feedback as we have news in this regard.
We discussed the informal access which is used to access the footpath to Gillfield Woods. There are no plans to formalise this and to do so will be expensive as it will need to meet the correct standards. We discussed altering the desire lines through the park change how this access is used and to allow the bank to establish planting.
The plans for Totley Hall Park needs to be defined but in the meant time, SCC has verbally agreed to carry out the following tasks (without need for FoTGS raising funds):
Remove middle bollard to provide wheelchair accessibility.
New signage at the entrance.
Move Bin away from main path slightly to reduce the smell as you enter the park.
SCC will source quote for a crushed stone path to provide safe, level access into the park.
Mow circular route around the park to encourage use as a walking, running and bike trail. Immediately.
No Mow area in the centre to create variety and increase biodiversity.
Provide an informal dog exercise area to encourage separate between children’s play equipment and dogs

Green Oak Park
The zip wire has been removed from Green Oak and there are no plans to replace it.
A building Condition Survey has been carried out on the two red brick park buildings. Both buildings have been deemed structurally poor and will require significant investment to bring back into use. A decision is pending on whether to demolish the buildings and resurface the area or to bring back into use. We will be kept informed of the outcome of this decision.
We asked about the cost of installing adventure play ground balance equipment (referred to a ‘trim trail’. It will be feasible to raise funds and keep adding to the different obstacles. The price to install the different items varies from £1k to £3k.
The Bowling Green is not occupied by a bowling club and can be put to another use.
We discussed the hedge gap into play area. Andy explained the difficulties in either formalising this as an access into the park or trying to block it off with hedging (as it will continue to be used and the heading will not establish). SCC will make enquiries about potential measure or fund for a more permanent fence.
